Rory McIlroy with his sights set on the career grand slam will skip the Masters
Par 3 Contest because of what he calls a ‘distraction.’ Moreover, he may be right about that, no par 3 contest winner has ever won the same year Masters Tournament. In fact, only four times has the par 3 champ won a major in the same year. Winning a “Green Jacket” would put Rors in the ultra-elite of professional golfers as number six in the Masters Era Career Grand Slam winners.
The world No. 3 golfer said, “It’s a bit of a distraction and the year I had my best chance at Augusta, 2011, I didn’t play the Par 3 contest. So maybe the decision not to play it this year can work in my favor.”
McIlroy finished in the top 10 at the WGC-Cadillac Championship in early March and closed out the month with fourth-place at the WGC Dell Match Play tournament played “Deep in the Heart of Texas” at Austin Country Club. Mr. McIlroy seems warned up and focused for the task at hand but guys like Spieth, Day, Rickie, Bubba, and even Phil will be there looking to add to their wardrobes.
Good luck Rory McIlroy at the 2016 Masters.
