Bubba Watson and Adam Scott commit to THE PLAYERS Championship 2018

The duo has 24 PGA TOUR wins between them; Watson already has two wins this season; Scott won THE PLAYERS in 2004 as a 23-year-old to capture the second of his now 13 TOUR wins
PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – THE PLAYERS Championship announced today that Bubba Watson and Adam Scott have committed to play in the 2018 tournament, contested at THE PLAYERS Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass May 8-13, 2018. This is timely news, as Watson recently won the World Golf Championships-Dell Technologies Match Play for his second PGA TOUR victory this season, and both Watson and Scott are competing in the Masters Tournament this week as past champions. Watson is still in search of his first win at THE PLAYERS, while Scott looks to hoist the Waterford Crystal for the first time in 14 years.
Bubba Watson
Just two weeks removed from his 7-and-6 victory over fellow Georgia Bulldog Kevin Kisner at the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play, now 11-time PGA TOUR winner Bubba Watson has formally committed to compete in THE PLAYERS Championship 2018. Bubba’s latest victory was his second of the 2017-18 season, as the 39-year-old also captured his third Genesis Open title in February. He also became the third player to claim multiple victories during the season, joining Patton Kizzire and Justin Thomas, and the fifth player to win multiple major championships and multiple WGC titles, joining Ernie Els, Rory McIlroy, Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods.
THE PLAYERS Stadium Course is fittingly named ‘the purest test in golf’ because it tests every facet of the game and every club in the bag, and Bubba Watson surely has experienced the demands of this course first-hand in his 10 previous appearances in this event, where he has missed four cuts and has never finished better than T37.
Given Watson’s success this season—he’s posted three top-10 finishes in 9 starts, has only missed one cut and currently ranks 4th in the FedExCup standings—perhaps 2018 will be his breakout year at THE PLAYERS. Should Watson, who is playing in his tenth Masters Tournament this week, take home his third green jacket, he would become the sixth player to earn his third Masters title, joining Jimmy Demaret, Sam Snead, Gary Player, Nick Faldo and Phil Mickelson.
Adam Scott
14 years ago, Adam Scott proved to the world that he could compete against the very best, becoming the youngest winner of THE PLAYERS Championship at the age of 23 (a record that stood until last year when Si Woo Kim won THE PLAYERS 2017 at the age of 21). The Australian—who had one TOUR victory to his name at the time, the Dell Technologies Championship—posted scores of 65-72-69-72—276 for a one-shot victory over Padraig Harrington.
Scott’s victory at THE PLAYERS Stadium Course was not stress-free, however. At one point in Scott’s final round, he held a five-stroke lead, but at the 72nd hole, with a two-stroke lead over Harrington, the Australian hooked his 6-iron approach shot from 213 yards into the water hazard. Needing to make an up-and-down from 39 yards to save bogey and avoid a playoff, Scott drained his 10-footer for bogey to defeat the best field in golf, earn his second PGA TOUR victory, catapult his professional career and firmly cement his name on the global stage.
Since Scott’s win at THE PLAYERS, the now 37-year-old has accumulated 11 more TOUR victories, most recently the 2016 WGC-Mexico Championship (then known as the WGC-Cadillac Championship). In seven starts this season, Scott has recorded three top-25 finishes, with his best a T13 finish at The Honda Classic.
The 2013 Masters champion (which was his first and only major title) will be making his 17thconsecutive appearance at the major championship this week and is coming off a T9 finish at August National Golf Club last year. Scott will also be making his 17th consecutive appearance at THE PLAYERS this year (dating to 2002), where he has only missed three cuts and has posted eight top-25 and four top-10 finishes. In his past six appearances at THE PLAYERS, he has finished no worse than T38, and he finished T6 last year, his best finish of his 16 starts last season.
